Cheeseburger atop obelisk

In our previous attempt at the Obelisk, SirLoinOfBeef and I had assuaged our disappointment by vowing to return for a second attempt.  Knowing that stupidity loves company, we immediately started to enlist other hikers.  SLOB took the lead in trying to entice someone to come along.  The want ad read:

Interested in Getting up at 4:30 on a Sunday morning such that that you can start a hike before 6 AM?

If you answered yes, then how about  hiking 7 miles and ascending 3000 feet?

Still interested?  Well then how about doing the majority of that on wet sloppy snow?

Getting excited?  Well then bring your gaitors, an ice ax and crampons and plan on eating a cold Carl’s Junior Famous Star Cheeseburger on top!

The weather you ask?  Oh possible rain showers turning to thunderstorms.

Shockingly we were not deluged with volunteers.   However, the usual suspects were intrigued.  Soon we had a summit party of Nils, Georges, Flying Elvis, Sirloin of Beef and myself.  Sadly Saturday night, Flying Elvis realized that he had a prior obligation (sleeping) and couldn’t make the trip.  So bright and early Sunday morning, our hardy band of 4 headed to the white pine trailhead to begin our hike.  In the 10 days since our previous effort, conditions had improved dramatically and we soon found ourselves making good time( Kudos to Nils for providing the group with a yeomans effort breaking trail).

As we began to ascend the North East ridge, we switched to using ice axes and soon donned our crampons.  The route up the ridge was glorious with phenomenal views all around.  As we reached the rock band near the top, we realized that crampons were no longer necessary and really more of a hindrance than a help.

With a bit of 3rd class scrambling we all reached the final ridge walk and saw our destination-The Obelisk.

 Ridgewalk to obelisk

A quick walk along the ridge and we were there.  Nils quickly scrambled atop and posed for pictures while eating:

 ‘The Best Cheeseburger Ever“!

best cheeseburger ever

Knowing that the weather was supposed to worsen as the day grew later, we began our descent.  The group used a myriad of descent styles ranging from glissading, plunge stepping and general flailing to descend the ridge.  No matter the style all 4 in our group quickly reached the bottom and we had an uneventful return to the trailhead.
