Mt. Hancock revisited

November 1st, 2008 – Saucy Red Meat picked me up at 8am and we headed north to my favorite stomping ground, New Hampshire’s White Mountains. It was a gorgeous day, as you can see, and as Red drove, I nosed through the White Mountain Guide looking for a suitable hike… long, with a summit, but not too much elevation. Mt. Hancock fit the bill. The problem, however, with doing summit selection in the car is that I had no recollection of the fact that Flame Broiled had already summited Hancock and South Hancock two months earlier. Oh well… we may not have helped the greater mission any, but we did add one each to our own personal counts. Unlike Flame Broiled, we only had one cheeseburger each, and both ate them on the North Peak (under the watchful eye of the resident crumb hawk) because we were famished by the time we got there and neither one of us cared to save our cheeseburger for the south peak.

The hike was 9.8 miles, mostly out-and-back, with a 2.5 mile loop over the two peaks and 4 large water crossings on the way out… and then on the way back. I had a brush with death when the first (icy) snowball of the new season that I threw at Saucy missed it’s mark and hit her in the face instead of the coat. OOPS!! Fortunately, I lived to tell the tale.

The cheeseburgers were from the Sunny Day Diner in Lincoln, NH, and they were huge!
