Hoo’s on Owl Head Mountain?

After an enjoyable morning hike up Mount Marcy, I returned to the Barkeater Inn to round up the family and find some lunch. I was hungry! MadeMarion and I herded everyone into the car and made a stop at the Stewart Shops for ice cream and, while there, we picked up two foil-wrapped Cheeseburgers. The gang wanted to attack Owl’s Head Mountain, which was just a few miles up the road from Keene. I think the allure of picking fresh blueberries was driving their enthusiasm.

From the parking area, it’s a short (3/4 mi?) hike to the rocky summit of Owl’s Head. Along the way everyone grazed on wild blueberries. The mountain is topped by a mass of rock that is popular for top-roping. We scrambled to the top for still-warm Cheeseburgers with a great view of the Great Range.

Our vacation in the Adirondacks was nearly over. On the return trip to the airport in New York CIty we stopped at Natural Stone Bridge and Caves in Pottersville, NY. A friend (Greg) from my college days (a long time ago) is now the proprietor and he gave us a personal tour of the grounds. The boys loved the place and we’ll be back sometime soon. Maybe we’ll also find a nearby summit!
