Finding the Trail – Elementary, my Dear Watson

wimp(y) and I decided to take a day off of work to do some exploring in the Uinta Mountains. As usual we began with an alpine start (5 am) and it was pitch black as wimp(y) drove to the Trail Lake trailhead. On the way there, he asks me to grab the steering wheel – somethings in his eye! It gets worse and he pulls over to the side of the interstate. He’s got sunscreen in his eyes. Now, the sun hasn’t risen yet and this guy’s being blinded by sunscreen. I’m no dermatologist but I believe that sunscreen is designed to protect your skin from the rays of the sun. And since it was still dark out….

Well, we eventually made it to the trailhead. The plan was to complete a loop over Haystack Mountain and Mount Watson with the possibility of taking on Notch Peak if time allowed. With our four-legged friend Farting Wonder in the lead we set off for Haystack pass. At the pass we headed cross country for the Haystack summit. It was a long hike over broken rock and the remains of last winter’s cornices. At the summit we enjoyed views of the sun rising over Bald Mountain as well as some delicious Cheeseburgers.

From the Haystack Ridge

We set off for Mount Watson by retracing our steps to the pass. The ascent of Watson was much steeper and longer. But we persevered to the summit and enjoyed another round of burgers. We started down the other side, heading in the direction of Notch Mountain. The route down wasn’t obvious and we started getting into sketchier terrain. The rocks were looser and the grade was steeper. Farting Wonder refused to continue down with us. At the point shown in the picture below we decided to head back up and retrace our steps.

Bad Descent Route

Before committing to a re-ascent of Mount Watson, I took a look over the lip of a band of rocks on the eastern side of the peak. A gentle, grass-covered slope led down to an obvious trail – I guess that would be more sensible descent route. The hike was completed without further ado; Farting Wonder was limping and so we eliminated the Notch Peak portion of the hike. Some other time.

You should plan on doing the same hike in January to get the Notch Mountain done. Looks beautiful!

I’ll need a snowmobile, crampons, and snowshoes. Will you be breaking trail?
