Number 13 – For Good Luck

After reading about last week’s monster (10 people, 2 dogs) ascent of the south summit of Mount Timpanogos (Wikipedia, SummitPost), Georges and I decided to also give it a try. We started out early Saturday morning, driving south through Alpine, UT to the alpine loop and arriving at the Timponeekee trailhead at 7:00 am. Can you believe it? – no parking spaces! We had to drive out of the campground area and park on the street below – adding many fractions of a mile to our 15 mile hike. We headed up at a good clip – and had to pass some 1.36 zillion hikers on the way up. It was unbelievably crowded. Seriously, we saw several hundreds of hikers on this hike. So much for getting out into the wilderness. But the trail was shady and cool and the flowers were in bloom (see photos) so the hike was enjoyable. At the summit I pulled out a Carl’s Jr. Star to make it Cheeseburger #13 for Mount Timpanogos. Georges gnawed at a brie sandwich with delight.

On the way down we tracked down Georges’ wife who was camping in the meadow below the summit. She had encountered a flock (is this correct?) of mountain goats on her way to Emerald Lake earlier that morning. Alas, no photos. After chatting for a while, and getting some refills on the water bottles, we bid goodbye and made our way back down to the trailhead. A long, enjoyable, crowded hike.

Mountain goats live in herds. Flying mountain goats travel in flocks.
