Plan the Hike, Hike the plan (Sunset Peak 10,522 ft)

Our second ascent of Sunset Peak in 4 days was the direct result of having to change our hiking plans on the fly. The day began with a 5:30 AM start and plans to hike up to Desolation Peak via the Bear Trap Fork trail. Upon further perusing of the map, it was deduced that this would entail almost 3,000 feet of altitude gain. Normally this would be seen as a challenge not a problem, but we all realized that we wouldn’t be able to finish early enough to make a token appearance at our respective jobs. Thus it was decided to summit Sunset Peak via the Catherine Pass Trail, originating in Little Cottonwood Canyon. After reaching the Catherine Pass Trail Head at 6:15 AM, we enjoyed a beautiful Utah morning with the surrounding peaks bathed in morning light. The ascent to Catherine Pass is made by following a well marked trail that meanders through a series of flowered meadows. After about a mile and a half we reached Catherine Pass and enjoyed a spectacular view to the north of the Peaks ringing the Brighton Ski area. We then continued our morning push along the ridgeline until we reached the top of Sunset Peak. The weather was brisk with a cold breeze that envigorated our spirits and motivated the group to eat quickly. Thanks to Patrick, we each enjoyed a delightful Wendy’s Big Bacon Classic Cheeseburger with ALL the fixins. As we enjoyed our dietary repast, the sun came out and lit up the clouds in an almost spiritual backdrop to the latest Cheeseburger Summit.
