July 4th — more than any other holiday, a truly American Holiday. The day of the year that defines the United States of America. We did not bring a flag to perch on the top of Mount Evergreen to punctuate this summer holiday, but we did bring a Star, a Carl’s Jr, Famous Star. Thanks Paul!

It was a early morning hike. We met at the usual place – the 15th and 15th Starbucks. To our pleasant surprise (at least mine) Starbucks was open at 6 am this Holiday morning. Certainly a good omen for the hike! We enjoyed our morning JO’ and took off from the Silver Lake trailhead. We had “faith” in our leader John as he led the way. Along the trail we spotted a couple marmot/groundhog-like locals (see pictures). The ascent was straightforward. The trail was steep at the top and in the end provided a nice view of other peaks, including Millicent and Wolverine circling us to the Southeast. At the summit we enjoyed 12-hour-old Carl’s Jr Famous Stars. Note to team — a healthy dollop of mayo makes it easier to swallow a cold cheeseburger!

We bushwhacked (of course) our way down an alternative route, heading almost due north and eventually west. We turned the typical out and back hike into a true loop.

Another great hike and another most enjoyable cheeseburger! John, Paul and Patrick
